Our Story

A group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® women, determined that there was a need to extend the reach of AKA’s sisterhood into the northern corridor of DeKalb County Georgia, started conversations about the expansion of the sorority into Brookhaven, Georgia. The ladies decided, however, that there was a greater need, so they included other surrounding communities. This corridor would consist of the communities of Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, and Dunwoody Georgia, one of the most diverse communities based on race, gender, creed, culture and socioeconomic status in DeKalb County.

In June 2019, there was a meeting with South Atlantic Regional Director Carolyn G. Randolph, who approved the exploration of the feasibility of a new chapter in North DeKalb County, Georgia. After receiving approval to assemble, the first official meeting had eight sorors in attendance and was held on June 16, 2019 at the Peachtree DeKalb Airport in Chamblee, Georgia. The core group of 8 invited others, and the group continued to expand. The second meeting took place at Kingswood United Methodist Church (church home of Brenda Johnson) in Dunwoody, Georgia.  This became the official gathering location for the potential interest group.

After considering several names, the group adopted "Perimeter Pearls". In December 2019, the group submitted its application to become an official interest group of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and on July 14, 2020 at the Virtual 69th Boule Part II/Leadership Seminar, the Directorate approved the Perimeter Pearls as an official interest group.

For more than 18 months, the Perimeter Pearls met under the leadership of Phyllis Mitchell, a Brookhaven resident, business owner, political insider, and community thought leader, to start laying the foundation toward chartering. Phyllis Mitchell was elected as the President of the Perimeter Pearls Interest Group.

Our Story

On May 15, 2022, the Perimeter Pearls gathered at the Hyatt Regency Villa Christina in Brookhaven, GA, for their chartering and luncheon ceremony officiated by Carolyn G. Randolph, South Atlantic Regional Director.
